Who We Are

CAMPT is Canada’s member organization of the International Federation of Manipulative Physical Therapists (IFOMPT), part of the World Confederation of Physical Therapy and the World Health Organization. CAMPT’s role is to advance orthopaedic manual therapy practice, education and research in Canada, and to monitor Canadian education programs to ensure they meet the standards of IFOMT.

Physiotherapists who are Fellows of the Canadian Academy of Manipulative Physiotherapy (FCAMPT) have completed extensive post-graduate education in the area of orthopaedics and have achieved internationally-recognized qualifications in hands-on manual and manipulative therapy.

FCAMPT physiotherapists’ knowledge and skills enable them to treat complex pathology and movement disorders of both the spine and extremities, which can cause both acute and chronic pain and disability.

Physiotherapists with the FCAMPT designation are committed to providing the highest level of quality, patient-centred care combining clinical experience with evidence-based practice.

What is Manual/Manipulative Physiotherapy?

Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapy is a specialized area of physiotherapy for the management of neuro-musculo-skeletal conditions, based on clinical reasoning, using highly specific treatment approaches including gentle, hands-on techniques and therapeutic exercise.

Manipulative Physiotherapy also encompasses, and is driven by, the available scientific and clinical evidence and the biopsychosocial framework of each individual patient.

Our Education

CAMPT physiotherapists are all registered physiotherapists licensed with their respective provincial colleges. Prior to entering practice, physiotherapists must graduate with a Master’s degree from a physical therapy education program at one of 14 accredited universities in Canada.

In addition to our entry-level education, CAMPT Physiotherapists have completed extensive, internationally recognized post-graduate education focusing on the diagnosis and treatment of complicated muscle and joint problems.

There are two CAMPT/IFOMPT accredited programs in Canada: The Canadian Physiotherapy Association’s Post-Graduate Syllabus Courses in Manual Therapy, as well as the University of Western Ontario’s Masters of Clinical Science Degree in Manipulative Physiotherapy. Both programs have their own syllabus and supervise their own examinations. CAMPT is a separate organization that monitors both programs.

There are dozens of programs in other IFOMPT countries. Physiotherapists who have completed a post-graduate manual therapy program and are eligible for membership in another IFOMT recognized country (MPA in Australia, NZMPA in New Zealand, MACP in the UK, AAOMPT in the United States, etc.) are also eligible for membership in CAMPT.

When treating patients, CAMPT Physiotherapists include advanced clinical examination, hands-on manual assessment and treatment of the joints of the spine and periphery, pain management techniques, and therapeutic exercise.

How We Can Help

CAMPT physiotherapists are a valuable member of the medical team. Our education in assessing and treating complicated orthopaedic conditions make us the best choice when dealing with conditions including myofascial, discogenic and articular spinal pain, cervical headaches, hip and pelvic pain and dysfunction among many others.
